For many cancer patients, losing their hair can fe For many cancer patients, losing their hair can feel like losing a piece of who they are.

With ongoing support from Athena Cosmetics, the Cancer Foundation of Santa Barbara is helping patients preserve their hair during treatment with scalp cooling.

Used at both Ridley-Tree Cancer Center and UCLA, the Paxman Scalp Cooling system helps reduce hair loss caused by chemotherapy.

Here’s why it matters:
👩 Emotional Well-Being: Preserving hair can help many patients feel more like themselves and navigate daily life without drawing unwanted attention to their diagnosis.
💵 Accessibility: Athena Cosmetics’ grant removes the financial burden of scalp cooling, which typically costs $1,400 to $2,400, making the treatment accessible to patients who might not otherwise afford it.
💙 Comprehensive Care: We believe in supporting care that does more than just treat the disease—we believe in care that helps the whole person.

Have you or someone you know tried scalp cooling?

Last year, we awarded a $10,000 grant to the Organic Soup Kitchen to help cancer patients in our community get the healthy food they need to stay strong and prevent malnutrition during treatment.

With this grant, the Organic Soup Kitchen:
✅ served approximately 400 cancer clients weekly, providing up to 72 servings per client weekly
✅ hand-delivered meals, ensuring consistent access to nutrition and reducing isolation for clients with limited mobility or energy

We are proud to support local organizations like the Organic Soup Kitchen so that superior cancer care and patient support services are available to all residents of Santa Barbara County.

This #WorldCancerDay, we’re highlighting the impor This #WorldCancerDay, we’re highlighting the importance of continued investment in cancer early detection, research, and treatment. 🎗🔬

Over the past decade (2014–2023), these investments helped reduce the U.S. cancer mortality rate by 1.5% per year on average (American Cancer Society).

By funding cancer care, research, and support services in Santa Barbara County, we’re helping drive that progress forward—so our neighbors and loved ones can access the care they need, when they need it most.

🤝Together, we can continue to improve cancer care, detection and research for our community. 🤝

February is both #BlackHistoryMonth and #LibraryLo February is both #BlackHistoryMonth and #LibraryLoversMonth, and we’re honoring both by spotlighting an important book available in the Ridley-Tree Cancer Center Library.

📖The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks tells the story of Henrietta Lacks, a poor black tobacco farmer whose #cells, taken without her knowledge in 1951, became one of the most important tools in #medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, in vitro fertilization, and more.

🔬Henrietta’s cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown. This riveting story raises lasting questions about #ethics, #consent, and racial equity in #healthcare.

🎗Thanks to support from the Cancer Foundation, patients and families can learn more about people like Henrietta, that shaped the future of cancer care, at Ridley-Tree Cancer Center’s Cancer Resource Library.

🎉Exciting news from the American Cancer Society’s 🎉Exciting news from the American Cancer Society’s recently released 2026 Cancer Statistics! For the first time, 70% of people diagnosed with cancer reach the 5-year mark.🎉

This improvement from a 63% survival rate in 1995 shows just how impactful improvements in prevention, early detection, treatment, and care have been over the past three decades.

“This stunning victory is largely the result of decades of cancer research that provided clinicians with the tools to treat the disease more effectively, turning many cancers from a death sentence into a chronic disease,” said Rebecca Siegel, senior scientific director of surveillance research at ACS and lead author of the report.

While this news is exciting, it should also remind all of us of the importance of continued support for research, cancer care, and comprehensive patient services.
